Online Job Search Errors

Because Internet-based job searches are so seductive, I thought you might find it helpful to read these common mistakes made by most online job searchers, excerpted from Job-Hunt.org's article, Dirty Dozen Online Job Mistakes:

  • Posting your resume online without any concern for privacy or online identity theft.
  • Relying on email as your primary means of communication with hiring managers.
  • Assuming that email is a more informal means of communicating with employers.
  • Using a "cute" email address.
  • Sending viruses along with your email messages.
  • Overrelying on the most well-known job postings sites.
  • Blasting your resume to thousands of employers or recruiters without prior research or concern for the match between your capabilities and their needs.
  • Expecting others to conduct your job search for you (automated online searches; recruiters; agencies; your Career Coach).
  • Limiting your job search to Internet-based methods only (getting tired of hearing me preach about this one?).
  • Applying for positions when you don't meet the employer's requirements.

And some resources for you:
